PROJECT SPECS

This project started out with my brother, dad and I talking about what car we should build and one that we haven’t seen done 100 times. After a lot of research we decided on a full body 60’s Ford and had it narrowed down to a Galaxie. We found the perfect car and it’s one of those stories you hear guys tell. We purchased a 1963 Galaxie xl500 boxtop with 39,000 original miles. The car was sold in New Mexico and lived almost it’s entire life there. The car drives like a dream with and came with a 390 automatic. We started disassembling the car in preparation for media blasting. On first inspection a few pin holes of rust were in the front passenger floor where the ac drain line was leaking. After stripping and media blasting we were very happy with the shell. The only rust spot was the one we already knew about and the rest is perfect! With all the old paint, seam sealer, etc off the car we epoxy primed for corrosion protection inside and out and started working. The goals are to enhance the original lines of the Galaxie keeping everything as sleek and smooth as possible. We are also going to focus on reducing the weight of the Galaxie, which weighs about 4,000lbs.

1963 Ford Galaxie
Project "Zero Gravity"

The frame has new front upper and lower control arms, rack/pinion steering, and will have a custom K member to mount the Ford Mod motor. The rear is a Ford 8” with new Currie hardened axles, center section, true trac diff and gears. The suspension is Airride Technologies front shockwaves for a Galaxie and a triangulated 4-link with shockwaves for the rear. An Art Morrison center x section will be installed to tie the frame together and make mounting the 4r70w trans, running exhaust much easier. Modifications to the frame and body will be made to achieve the stance in the rendering and have enough room for the 20” front and 22” rear wheels. The body is receiving some modifications to enhance the lines and smooth out the appearance. The door handles and lock holes are shaved, the front wing windows removed, all moldings removed, holes filled and drip rails shaved. The rear taillights have been modified to resemble stock but now mount from the rear. The housings are also frenched in, dad gave them the old school lead treatment. The bumpers will be smoothed of bolts and fit closer to the body. A custom front grill and modified lights will round out the front end. The driveline will be an all aluminum carburated 4.6L Mod motor, 4r70w automatic trans, aluminum driveshaft, and 8” rear. Wilwood disc brakes, custom one off wheels with Goodyear rubber for all 4 corners. The interior will be designed and complete by Tracy Weaver at The Recovery Room.
